The Sanitation Division of the Department of Public Works collects refuse weekly for single family units to four unit dwellings and condominiums and currently uses rear-load collection trucks and a two-man crew.  The Department of Public Works has purchased the first of two side arm trucks, which will be used to collect refuse in the city.  Residents will see both rear-load and side arm refuse collections in the future.

All residents inside the city limits of West Bend who would like curbside refuse collection are required to use an approved refuse cart purchased from the City of West Bend.  Approved carts will have "City of West Bend" printed on the side and have an eight to nine digit serial number printed on the front of the cart.  The City of West Bend Department of Public Works has sold 35, 65 and 95 gallon refuse carts since 2003, all of which will work with the new semi-automatic truck (35 gal carts are no longer available for purchase from DPW).  If you already have a refuse cart with "City of West Bend" printed on the side, you will not need to purchase a new cart.  Each residence is allow a maximum of two refuse carts.

ALL refuse must be placed inside the refuse cart in order to be collected with the exception of waste motor oil and lead-acid batteries.  Other refuse placed outside the cart will not be picked.  Carts should face the street and must be placed away from other carts, structures, light poles, vehicles, etc.  Rule of thumb- you should be able to comfortably walk completely around the cart for it to be collected.

Cart Placement Guide

Refuse must be placed at the curb or alley line by 6:00 a.m. to ensure weekly pickup. Refuse may not be placed at the curb or alley line more than 12 hours prior to collection and containers must be removed within 12 hours after collection.

Refuse must be drained and wrapped. Disposable diapers, animal waste, sawdust, kitty litter and ashes must be placed in plastic bags and securely tied prior to placement in garbage cans. Refuse strewn by animals or vandals prior to collection is the responsibility of the occupant or property owner. 

State law prohibits disposal of electronic wastes and organic materials in landfills. Electronic wastes may NOT be placed in your refuse or recycling carts.  They must be taken to a licensed recycler.  Organic materials may be brought to the Drop-Off Yard.

There will be NO CHANGES to your collection day once the one-arm truck arrives.  However, your refuse collection method may change.  To find your collection day and method (either by the traditional, rear-load truck with a two man crew or by the new semi-automatic, one-arm truck), open the file below and use the "find" feature, located under the "edit" drop-down menu, to search for your address.  You may also scroll through the pages to find your street and corresponding house number.

Refuse/garbage carts may be purchased at the Public Works office.  Refuse carts are considered personal property and may be taken if you move or left for the next homeowner.  Renters should check with their landlord prior to removing the refuse cart.  Recycling carts (green with yellow lid) are the property of the recycler and must always remain at the property.
