Common Council Awards Design Contract for Universally Inclusive Playground

West Bend, Wis. (September 14, 2020): The City of West Bend Park and Recreation Commission is pleased to announce the development of a Universally Inclusive Playground (a.k.a. All Abilities Playground). The proposed location of the playground is on the south end of Ridge Run Park. The playground committee—composed of several commission members, City staff, District 8 Alderman Meghann Kennedy, and a group of local parents—received six proposals and interviewed three finalists. The committee recommended Play By Design (PBD) to the Common Council, which voted unanimously to award the contract.

“A Universally Inclusive Playground will provide a sensory rich experience for children and adults of all abilities,” said Mike Jentsch, Parks, Recreation and Forestry Director. “This will be first Universally Inclusive Playground in the City of West Bend. It will serve local families and the greater community.”

The cost of design services is estimated not to exceed $30,000.00. West Bend Friends of Parks and Recreation committed $15,000.00 toward the design process of the project. An additional $15,000.00 will be transferred from the Park Trust Park Fees account. The Common Council also approved the donation and transfer of funds. PBD will work closely with City staff, the playground committee, and community to develop concept plans, construction drawings, cost estimates, and marketing materials. PBD has experience in designing and developing Universally Inclusive Playgrounds, including playgrounds in Port Washington, Franklin, and Kenosha.

A fundraising campaign will take place to acquire funds needed to construct the park. The estimated cost of construction is $500,000 to $1,000,000. Fundraising efforts will drive the future project timeline.
